Planning and evaluation Kerrang - Enter Shikari

Enter Shikari played a politically-charged set on Glastonbury's Other Stage this afternoon (June 28), encouraging the massive audience to make a stand against war."Lets hear it Glastonbury, I wanna see every pair of hands in the air!" frontman Roughton Reynolds instructed the audience, before playing opening song 'Solidarity'.Wearing shorts and a T-shirt, the frontman was in an energetic mood for the entirety of the band's set, running, jumping and climbing around the stage.'Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour' saw bassist Chris Batten tell the crowd to create a wall of death - where fans part and then mosh and run towards each other.
Within this text, I extracted it from Kerrang, this is a rock/indie magazine therefore similar to NME which is what I am basing my magazine on. I think this article is just as serious as the Bloc Party article but it's a whole different story. It's not the band being broken up as we heard in Bloc Party's, it's about how Enter Shikari became political at a huge gig (Glastonbury) to help express their political emotions. The tone of the article is quite serious, and tells the reader quite a lot about what the performer was wearing, and what song they expressed their political views before and after the track. The grammatical feature within this is used well just like Bloc Party, they highlight the name of the band and performers. Kerrang do it slightly diffrerently and underline them. Still it is effective.

Planning and evaluation of article NME - Bloc Party

Firstly I will be using NME's article about their lead drummer Matt Tong who rumors to leave the band:

"Bloc Party drummer Matt Tong has fuelled rumours he will quit the band by hinting that he may not work with them again.

Frontman Kele Okereke recently revealed the group are set to go on a hiatus following their current tour – but Tong has implied he fancies a complete change, at least while the group are on their break.

"I definitely don't think this will be the last you'll hear of the people who make up Bloc Party," he said. "Keleis an insatiable workaholic and creating is something he is so connected to, so you'll definitely hear from him again

This piece I believe is quite a serious part as it is a main person within the band, the talented drummer Matt Tong could leave, which could shatter the band! - NME have put the band member name's in bold to help it stand out and to give the reader a clear indication of who is the members. They use quotes from the members to help give validity, and bring you with the band as it is almost like they are talking to you and telling you about what is happening. If we think about in terms of Purpose + Audience well it's quite clear. The purpose of the article is to tell people that their is rumors and worries within the band that Matt tong may be leaving as he wants something different. And the audience it is attended to is to people who are interested in indie music, especially Bloc Party!

Planning and Evaluation of the article

Photo Editing

I edited two photos that I took, this was with the access of my Macbook, this has a software called Iphoto, which allows you to edit photos and add effects. In my one photo I used edge blur and made the colour 'sepia' this makes it look authentic and give it a edge, which makes it different to the other pictures, which makes it unique thus appealing to my readers. I also put the picture of the band in black and white. This is because their name being Moonbase - The moon is a white form of colour, so I thought the link between them and the moon would be good. I believe adding effects to images is a good idea. It helps create the picture to be different, and gives it an edge. Also some magazines which include models in their pictures, they use photoshop to add thins such as different skin colour's or erasing marks or spots that the model might not want to be seen. This makes the model look immaculate, which reflects the magazines

Photos

In my pictures it's quite clear that the clothes they are wearing are an 'Indie' style, which helps compliment the magazines style of music and target audience that I want it to appeal to. In one picture, their is lead singer Adam Pitts playing the drums, he looks quite laid back and cool. Which is what my magazine is like. Also for the front cover, I have the whole band all 4 members standing looking directly at the camera. This helps associate the readers with the band, and I also made one of them hold a guitar, to show that they are a musical band. In conclusion, all the pictures look very 'cool' and 'indie' which is exactly what I want my magazine to be about. They are young, cool and ready for the music! exactly what I want my magazine to be about.

Fonts

Within the writing I have done I have chosen to you a website called "Dafont" this allows people to write phrases or words and put them into a creative design. My magazine masthead is "varsity" - The principal team representing a university, college, or school in sports, games, or other competitions. The reason why I chose this word, is because my target audience is the youth and as varsity represents college's etc so that's why I chose this. The fonts will be big and bold which will make it stand out and eye catching!

My tag line is "we specialise in music" this is quite catchy and shows that we have a good knowledge in music, which is good for the people who buy the magazine as they want to know about music, and we can provide this!

The body text will be arial, as it is a clean and simple font, that will be easy for the reader to read.

Most of my headings will be like the masthead and I will use "Dafont" and pick a suitable style for the headline.

Contents, Title, Double page spread

I had to create three flat plans. each showing my title page, double page spread and contents page. As these are only brief designs there is not much detail or colour involved into them. But these are just to give me a rough outline of what I shall base my idea's on! - As you can see I have placed my illistrations in, and paragraphs about the band etc. All resulting into a good piece all about the band

Double page Spread.

This double page spread is mainly focused on a article about a band called 'The Teenagers', which is a band that fits in with part of the target audience, teens. The image of them is all about them looking cool and giving off the idea they live a lifestyle that the readers will be able to connect with. By this, one of the things I am referring to is their pose. They look very laid back and relaxed and have a look associated to many teenagers, the look of being 'past caring'.
Another thing that caught my attention is the pictures in the background, they are of woman posing naked - Due to the audience that would read this magazine (Predominately male) it should help attract that audience.
Looking at the colour scheme, it is primarily Blue, white and black. Which helps make the title stand out, the pull quote and the information box about the band. From the layout, it is hard to see if there is any sort of plan to it but it could be seen as using a 3 column plan with the image, article and side box. Also along with the main image and band, there is subheadings of other bands that are included within the magazine - For example The rascals or Crystal castles will be featured. These are good examples of upbeat indie bands, which in all honesty is the majority of music in the NME.

Contents Page

This is the contents page of the NME, immediately You can see the two pictures of the ever so popular band of Oasis, this seems to be the main article, and how they kicked off their world tour! - This is shown in importance by making it the main thing you see, combined with an illustration. Their body postures in the pictures show them cool and relaxed, which could help represent the music they play. The red band index down the left side makes the white and grey and black font colours stand out against it so it is easily readable.
The usual content page conventions are shown along with the mast head "NME", To the right of the page it clearly shows the different sections within the magazine, such as News, Reviews etc. At the bottom of the page you can see their is an advertisement, this helps bring in money externally, via advertising which makes the NME more wealthy.

Analysis of existing magazines

This is my second front page that I will be evaluating, this is similar top NME's front page but also different. For example, they use the same font (Big + Bold) to help stand out and draw the readers eye. I think that NME's cover was more colourful, but this is due to who the magazine is intended to. For example, this is a hip hop genre of magazine. And due to it being a hip hop magazine a large majority of Black people listen to this style of music. This is why they have got a very famous hip hop artist of 50 cent to be the main image. Like NME they show on the front cover, what the feature article is going to be about, and other artists etc that will be included within the magazine, such as at the top it tells of "Vibes top 25 sexiest stars" including popular artists such as Beyonce and Shakira. The dark colour scheme in the background of 50 Cent, could help to emphasise his for of 'bad look' as he is percieved as a 'gangster' so he will want to be perceived as bad. Not in terms of his music but perhaps his way of life. This is good as the dark/stormy background helps to show this, along with his almost scary pose he is doing, looking dead into the camera.

Analysis of existing magazines

What I want to do is write a detailed blog about two magazines of different genres, but one being in the rock category: My first magazine is NME''s February issue, where quite clearly the use of colour is the dominant feature. They use yellow and blue primarily to create an eye catching effect. For the reader to know what magazine it is, NME have listed there mast head on the top left corner. One of the most frequently used ways of directing the viewers eyes is to the centre of interest . The centre of interest is usually the spot in the middle of the page. and in this instant it is The Wombats take up the centre spot, this is because they are the feature article, and the magazine has focused on them. The use of type design is very important here as there is lots going on, and they try to create lots of different formats to help make it look different and keep it interesting to the reader. For example, straight away you notice the bold yellow "WOMBATS" this helps show that this is eye catching and that's what they wanted to do as it is a feature article.

Statistics and facts

I used http://www.nrs.co.uk/ to help me find some statistics on what are the popular magazines in the UK. The website helped show me what men/woman read and what age group. Thinking about the pyschographics, I believe my magazine will be classed as an individualists this meaning that it will appeal to people who want to show the world how they are different. Also using the table that I got of the http://www.nrs.co.uk/ it helped show me what different socio economic classification might read the magazine. For example, it is set out as ABC. A being jobs like doctors and lawyers (Higher class) and C being like office workers, looking at the NME list it seems that people within the C-B category read this magazine. And as this is my target audience I should be aiming to the C-B category. Also it shows how almost double readers are male(296000), compared to woman (91,000) so predominately I should target my magazine to appeal to male gender. Now looking at Kerrang as a magazine, this is a little bit different to NME as it is more in the rock category, compared to NME is Indie. Still Kerrang would appeal to individualists because it means that it will appeal to people who want to show the world how they are different. When I looked on the table at Kerrang, it was similar to NME's as it falls into the same socio economic group of C-B also another similarity is more men read Kerrang then woman.

The Main Article

My task is to complete a musical magazine, with a front page plus a contents page and a two page spread. This will all be fully detailed and also have images on my focused band. The music choice that I have chosen is Indie, primarily this is due to:

1. It's the music I listen to - therefore it being easiest to relate to.
2. I also read Indie magazines such as (NME) and I could use this as a template or a base of my ideas.

Also I must mention that the task that I completed as my preliminary work helped me as a kind of "starter" for this main coursework. Below is a full list of everything I did in the preliminary coursework and I also listed it with captions and a brief description of why I did this.

Flat plan contents

My contents page is just a brief overview of what my main one is going to be about - As my flat plan of my front page, I will introduce colour and images to give it an upbeat

Flat plan

This is my flat plan of the front cover of my magazine - Obviousley my main cover will be more colourful and vibrant. But this helps give me a quick overview of what I need to put in it.

On my front page I have made it colourful and also showed things such as "Price" etc. I gave a brief view on what my magazine is about and what will be included within it. I also gave a cheeky catchphrase saying "were counting on you!" just to help emphasise that we need the students vote to get Dom up in the ranks of President.

My contents is bright and vibrant. This drags the reader in. therefore resulting in profit, also I think that what I have within my magazine are interesting: such as "How he achieved his greatness?" This is all interesting and means they will enjoy it!

Introduction

In my college magazine I am intending to introduce how Dominic Thomas can be student president and what he can introduce to you. My target audience are the students of Lewes community college, and due to the target audience they know that the president will effect there student life. So it's important! I will use presentational devices to help draw the reader in such as the use of colour's and pictures.

I also wanted to give it a test review, therefore I asked three people in the class what they thought of it. The results were positive - All three said that it was bright and eye catching. And that they would most likely want to buy the magazine when it is on offer. This helps me feel confident on my Magazine. They also liked the main article, as it was about Lewes College student President, therefore it relating to the "students" within the College. So it appeals to my main target.
